Are We Disciples of Jesus?

As Christians, we often refer to ourselves as followers of Jesus. But are we truly disciples of Him What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus, and how can we live out our faith in a way that reflects this

What is a Disciple

The word disciple comes from the Greek word mathētēs, which means “learner” or “student.” A disciple is someone who follows a teacher or leader, learning from them and seeking to imitate their example.

In the context of Christianity, a disciple is someone who follows Jesus Christ. This involves more than just believing in Him – it means actively seeking to learn from Him and follow His teachings.

As Jesus Himself said in Matthew 16:24, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. “

What Does it Mean to be a Disciple of Jesus

To be a disciple of Jesus means to make Him the center of our lives. It means surrendering our own desires and submitting ourselves fully to His will.

Jesus taught us that being a disciple involves loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30) and loving others as ourselves (Mark 12:31). This love should permeate every aspect of our lives – in our relationships with others, our work, our hobbies, and even our thoughts.

Being a disciple also involves studying God’s Word and applying it to our lives. As Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

How Can We Live as Disciples of Jesus

Living as a disciple of Jesus requires intentional effort on our part. Here are a few practical ways we can seek to follow Him:

  • Prayer: We should make prayer a priority in our lives, regularly seeking God’s guidance and asking for His strength.
  • Bible Study: We should regularly read and study God’s Word, meditating on its truths and seeking to apply them to our lives.
  • Fellowship: We should surround ourselves with other believers who can encourage us in our faith and hold us accountable.
  • Serving Others: We should seek opportunities to serve others in Jesus’ name, following His example of selflessness and compassion.

By intentionally pursuing these practices, we can grow in our relationship with Jesus and become more like Him. As we do so, we will not only be followers of Christ but true disciples – learners who seek to follow His teachings and imitate His example.

In Conclusion

Being a disciple of Jesus involves more than just calling ourselves Christians – it means actively seeking to follow Him and live out His teachings in our daily lives. By making Him the center of our lives and intentionally pursuing practices such as prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and serving others, we can become true disciples of Christ.
