Did Jesus Serve His Disciples?

The Servant Leader

Jesus Christ is known for his teachings on love, compassion, and service. He was a great leader who led by example.

Unlike many leaders of his time, Jesus was not interested in power and authority. Instead, he taught that true leadership is about serving others.

Jesus’ message of servant leadership is evident in the way he treated his disciples. He did not demand respect or obedience from them but instead served them with humility and love.

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

One of the most powerful examples of Jesus’ servant leadership can be seen in the story of him washing his disciples’ feet. This act was a common practice in Jesus’ time, as people wore sandals and their feet would get dirty from walking on dusty roads.

During the Last Supper, Jesus took off his outer clothing, wrapped a towel around his waist, poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet. This was a job reserved for servants or slaves, yet here was Jesus performing this menial task for his disciples.

Peter objected to this act of servitude but Jesus explained that he was setting an example for them to follow.

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”

Serving Others Above All Else

Jesus taught that serving others should be our top priority. In Matthew 20:28 he says,

“..just as the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus’ life was a testament to this message. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and spent time with those who were marginalized in society.

Jesus Christ was the ultimate servant leader. He taught us that true leadership is not about power or authority but about serving others with humility and love. His example of washing his disciples’ feet is a powerful reminder of the importance of serving others, no matter how menial the task may seem.

Let us follow Jesus’ example and strive to serve others above all else.
