When we talk about the disciples of Jesus, the first question that comes to mind is how did they decide to follow Him? What made them leave their families and professions to join Jesus on His mission? Let’s dive into the history and find out.
Who were the Disciples?
The disciples were a group of twelve men who followed Jesus during His ministry on Earth. They were Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus (also known as Judas son of James), Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot.
Why did they Follow Jesus?
There were different reasons why each disciple decided to follow Jesus. Some followed because they were impressed by His teachings while others followed because He performed miracles. Let’s take a look at some of their stories.
Peter and Andrew
Peter and Andrew were brothers who worked as fishermen. One day while they were casting their nets into the sea, Jesus passed by and called out to them saying “Come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
James and John
James and John were also brothers who worked with their father Zebedee in his fishing business. One day while they were mending their nets with their father, Jesus called out to them. They left their father in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.
Matthew
Matthew was a tax collector who collected taxes on behalf of the Roman government. One day while he was sitting in his tax booth, Jesus passed by and called out to him saying “Follow me.” Matthew got up from his booth and followed Him.
Others
The rest of the disciples were also called by Jesus to follow Him. Some of them, like Philip and Bartholomew, were introduced to Jesus by other disciples. Others like Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot are not mentioned in detail in the Bible.
Their Journey with Jesus
The disciples’ journey with Jesus was not always smooth sailing. They faced many challenges and obstacles along the way. They witnessed Jesus’ miracles and teachings but also experienced His suffering and death.
Denial
Peter denied knowing Jesus three times when He was arrested and put on trial. This must have been a difficult moment for Peter as he had left everything to follow Jesus.
Betrayal
Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus by revealing His whereabouts to the authorities for thirty pieces of silver. This led to Jesus’ arrest and ultimately His crucifixion.
