How Many Appearances Did Jesus Have After the Resurrection?

After rising from the dead, Jesus appeared to many of his followers before ascending into heaven. The number of appearances he made after his resurrection is a topic that has been debated by scholars for centuries. In this article, we will explore the different accounts of Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances as documented in the Bible.

The First Appearance

According to the Gospel of Mark, Jesus’ first appearance was to Mary Magdalene. Mark 16:9 states, “Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.”

Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus’ most loyal followers and was present at his crucifixion. She went to the tomb early on Sunday morning and found it empty. It was then that Jesus appeared to her.

Appearances to the Disciples

After appearing to Mary Magdalene, Jesus appeared to two disciples on their way to Emmaus. Luke 24:13-16 states, “That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.”

Later that same day, Jesus appeared to his disciples while they were gathered together in a locked room. John 20:19-20 states, “On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.”

Appearances Outside Jerusalem

Jesus also appeared to his disciples outside of Jerusalem. John 21:1-14 describes an appearance where Jesus appeared to his disciples while they were fishing on the Sea of Galilee.

This was not the only time that Jesus appeared to his followers in a different location. In Matthew 28:16-20, Jesus appears to his disciples on a mountain in Galilee and commissions them to spread the gospel.

Appearances to Paul and James

The Apostle Paul and James, the brother of Jesus, also had post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. In 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, Paul writes about how he saw Jesus after his resurrection and how he appeared to many other people as well. James’ appearance is mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:7, which states, “Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”

In conclusion, there were several documented appearances of Jesus after his resurrection. These appearances helped solidify the belief among his followers that he was indeed the Messiah. While there is some debate among scholars as to the exact number of appearances made by Jesus after his resurrection, it is clear that these appearances played a significant role in shaping Christianity as we know it today.
