How Many Times Did Jesus Appear to His Disciples After His Resurrection?

After Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared to His disciples multiple times before ascending into heaven. The number of appearances is often debated among biblical scholars, but there are at least 10 recorded instances in the New Testament. Let’s take a closer look at each one of them.

1. Mary Magdalene

On the morning of the resurrection, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and found it empty.

She encountered Jesus outside the tomb and initially mistook Him for a gardener. When He spoke her name, she recognized Him (John 20:11-18).

2. The Other Women

Mary Magdalene wasn’t alone in visiting the tomb that morning; she was accompanied by other women, including Salome and Mary the mother of James.

As they were on their way to tell the disciples about what they had seen, Jesus appeared to them (Matthew 28:8-10).

3. Peter

After hearing from Mary Magdalene and the other women that Jesus had risen, Peter ran to the tomb to see for himself.

While he was there, Jesus appeared to him (Luke 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:5).

4. Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus

Later on the day of His resurrection, Jesus appeared to two disciples who were traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus.

They didn’t recognize Him at first, but after He broke bread with them they realized who He was (Luke 24:13-35).

5. Ten Apostles (Without Thomas)

On the evening of His resurrection day, Jesus appeared to ten of His apostles while they were in a locked room discussing what had happened.

Thomas was not present (John 20:19-23).

6. Eleven Apostles (With Thomas)

A week later, Jesus appeared to all eleven of His apostles, including Thomas this time.

He encouraged Thomas to touch His wounds to confirm that He was indeed alive (John 20:24-29).

7. Seven Disciples While Fishing

After some time had passed, seven of Jesus’ disciples went fishing on the Sea of Galilee.

Jesus appeared to them on the shore and cooked breakfast for them (John 21:1-14).

8. Eleven Apostles on a Mountain in Galilee

Jesus instructed His apostles to meet Him on a mountain in Galilee, where He appeared to all of them and gave them the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20).

9. Above 500 People at Once

Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians that Jesus appeared to more than 500 people at once after His resurrection, although no specific account of this event is recorded in the Gospels (1 Corinthians 15:6).

10. James, the Brother of Jesus

The last recorded appearance of Jesus after His resurrection is when He appeared to James, His own brother who initially didn’t believe in Him (1 Corinthians 15:7).

In conclusion, there were at least ten recorded instances where Jesus appeared to people after His resurrection – Mary Magdalene, other women, Peter, two disciples on the road to Emmaus, ten apostles without Thomas, eleven apostles with Thomas, seven disciples while fishing, eleven apostles on a mountain in Galilee, above 500 people at once, and James. Each of these appearances helped to solidify the reality of Jesus’ resurrection and gave hope to His followers that death had been defeated.
