After the resurrection of Jesus, He spent 40 days on Earth before ascending into heaven. So, what did he do during that time? Let’s explore.
Appearances to Disciples
During these 40 days, Jesus appeared to his disciples multiple times. In fact, He appeared to them at least 10 times as recorded in the Bible.
The first appearance was to Mary Magdalene at the tomb (John 20:11-18). Then, He appeared to two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). Later that same day, Jesus appeared to the apostles in Jerusalem (Luke 24:36-43).
Teaching and Preaching
Jesus also spent this time teaching and preaching about the kingdom of God. Luke tells us that “He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3 ESV).
The Great Commission
One of the most famous teachings during this time was when Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission. This is recorded in Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus commands His followers to go and make disciples of all nations.
“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. ‘”
This command is still relevant today and is often used as a call for Christians around the world.
Ascension into Heaven
After spending 40 days with His disciples on Earth, Jesus ascended into heaven. This event is recorded in Acts 1:9-11.
“And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven?
This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. ‘”
This event marks the end of Jesus’ physical presence on Earth but not the end of His impact. His teachings and commands continue to inspire and guide millions of people around the world.
In summary, after His resurrection Jesus spent 40 days appearing to his disciples multiple times. He also spent time teaching about the kingdom of God and giving His followers the Great Commission. Finally, He ascended into heaven leaving behind a legacy that continues to impact people’s lives today.
