What Was Jesus Trying to Teach His Disciples When He Fell Asleep on the Boat During a Fierce Storm?

When Jesus and his disciples were on a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee, a fierce storm arose. The winds howled, the waves crashed against the boat, and the rain poured down.

The disciples were terrified and thought they would drown. But Jesus was sound asleep in the stern of the boat. What was he trying to teach his disciples by sleeping through this terrifying storm?

The Storm

The Sea of Galilee is known for its sudden and violent storms. The water is relatively shallow, making it prone to sudden changes in weather patterns. This storm was no exception – it would have been terrifying for anyone on board.

The Disciples’ Fear

The disciples were experienced fishermen who knew how to handle a boat in rough seas. But this storm was different – it was beyond their control, and they felt helpless and afraid.

Matthew 8:24-26 tells us that “Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!'”

Jesus’ Response

Jesus woke up and rebuked the winds and waves, saying “Quiet! Be still!”

(Mark 4:39). Immediately, the wind died down and the water became completely calm.

Matthew 8:26-27 continues with Jesus asking his disciples why they were so afraid and had so little faith.

The Lesson

What can we learn from this story? One lesson is that even when we are facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles or situations beyond our control, we can trust that God is with us and will provide a way through.

Another lesson is that faith means trusting in God’s power even when everything around us seems to be falling apart. The disciples were afraid because they forgot who was in the boat with them – the Son of God, who has power over everything, even the wind and waves.

In our own lives, we may face storms that seem overwhelming and frightening. But like the disciples, we can turn to Jesus and trust in his power and presence. We can have faith that he will calm the storms in our lives and guide us through even the most difficult situations.

  • Remember that God is with you always.
  • Trust in his power to calm the storms in your life.
  • Have faith, even when things seem impossible.

Jesus’ sleeping through the storm on the Sea of Galilee was not a sign of indifference or apathy. Rather, it was a powerful demonstration of his trust in God’s sovereignty and his desire for his disciples to have faith as well. May we too trust in God’s power and presence, even when we are facing the fiercest storms of life.
