Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity, is known for his teachings, miracles, and prayers. One of the most significant events in his life was his prayer with the disciples. Let’s explore when this event took place.
The Last Supper
The Last Supper was a meal shared by Jesus Christ and his disciples before he was crucified. During this meal, Jesus knew that his time on earth was coming to an end and he wanted to spend it with his closest followers. As they were eating, Jesus spoke about his upcoming betrayal and death.
After he had spoken these words, he took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to his disciples saying “Take, eat; this is my body.” He also took a cup of wine and said “Drink from it all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
It was during this meal that Jesus prayed with the disciples. The Gospel of Matthew 26:26-30 says that after they had eaten together, Jesus took bread, blessed it and broke it saying “Take eat; this is my body.”
He then took a cup saying “Drink from it all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. “
The Garden of Gethsemane
Another significant moment when Jesus prayed with his disciples was in the Garden of Gethsemane. After leaving the Last Supper, Jesus went to pray in private while his disciples waited nearby. He asked them to stay awake while he prayed but they fell asleep.
Jesus prayed fervently to God asking if there was any other way than what was about to happen. “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).
He then returned to the disciples and found them sleeping. He woke them up and told them that his betrayer was coming. This event led to his arrest and eventual crucifixion.
The Importance of Prayer
Jesus Christ’s life was filled with prayer and he often taught his followers about its importance. Prayer allowed him to connect with God, seek guidance, and find strength during difficult times.
The prayer Jesus shared with his disciples during the Last Supper and in the Garden of Gethsemane serves as a reminder of the power of prayer and the importance of seeking God’s will in our lives.
