When Did Jesus Take the Boat With the Disciples?

The Bible Story

One of the most famous stories in the Bible is when Jesus took the boat with his disciples. This story is recorded in all four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The story goes that Jesus and his disciples were in a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee when a fierce storm arose.

The disciples were terrified and thought they were going to die, but Jesus calmed the storm with just a word. This miracle amazed them and they realized that Jesus was not just an ordinary man but had power over nature itself.

When Did This Happen

So, when did this event take place According to Mark 4:35-41, it happened after a day of teaching by Jesus:

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.

The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid Do you still have no faith”

This passage tells us that Jesus took his disciples on a boat trip across the Sea of Galilee after a day of teaching. However, it does not give us an exact date or time.

In Matthew 8:18-27, the story is very similar, but it gives us a bit more information about the timing:

When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat.

But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

This passage tells us that Jesus had just finished teaching when he told his disciples to get in a boat with him. It also tells us that one of his disciples wanted to bury his father before following Jesus but was told to follow Him instead.

Conclusion

So when did Jesus take the boat with his disciples Based on these two passages from Matthew and Mark’s Gospels it seems likely that it happened after a day of teaching by Jesus. Though we cannot be sure about an exact date or time we can still marvel at this amazing story and its message about faith.
