Where in the Bible Does It Talk About Jesus Bringing Lazarus Back to Life?

The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is one of the most well-known and impactful miracles in the Bible. It is a powerful demonstration of Jesus’ divine power over death and his love for his friends. The story can be found in the Gospel of John, chapter 11.

The Illness and Death of Lazarus

The story begins with Jesus receiving news that his friend Lazarus is sick. Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha, who were also close friends of Jesus.

Despite receiving this news, Jesus did not immediately go to visit Lazarus. Instead, he stayed where he was for two more days before beginning the journey to Bethany, where Lazarus lived.

When Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, he found that Lazarus had already been dead for four days. Martha and Mary were both grieving their brother’s death when they heard that Jesus had finally arrived.

They went out to meet him separately, each saying “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:21 & 32)

The Miracle

Jesus was deeply moved by their grief and asked to be taken to the tomb where Lazarus was buried. When they arrived at the tomb, Jesus wept openly for his friend’s death. Then he commanded that the stone covering the tomb be removed.

Martha warned him that there would be a strong odor because Lazarus had been dead for four days but Jesus persisted nonetheless. He then spoke aloud: “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” (John 11:41-42)

After this prayerful statement, he called out in a loud voice “Lazarus come forth!” (John 11:43) To everyone’s amazement, Lazarus rose from the dead and walked out of the tomb, still wrapped in his burial clothes.

The Significance

This miracle not only demonstrated Jesus’ divine power over death but also served as a sign that he was indeed the Son of God. The raising of Lazarus from the dead was a precursor to Jesus’ own resurrection, which would come just a few days later.

This story also shows Jesus’ deep love for his friends and his willingness to go to great lengths to comfort and heal them. It is a reminder that no matter how hopeless our situation may seem, we can always turn to Jesus for help and healing.

The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is a powerful example of his divine power, love, and compassion. It reminds us that even in our darkest moments, we are never alone and that there is always hope for healing and new life. The story can be found in John 11:1-44 and serves as an inspiration for Christians around the world.
