When we think of Jesus and his disciples, we often picture a large group of men traveling together. However, it’s important to remember that Jesus’ ministry began with just three close followers – Peter, Andrew, and James.
Peter:
Peter was originally named Simon and was a fisherman by trade. He lived in the town of Bethsaida with his brother Andrew and worked alongside him as a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee.
It was Andrew who introduced Peter to Jesus, telling him “We have found the Messiah” (John 1:41). From that moment on, Peter became one of Jesus’ most devoted followers.
The Calling of Peter
One day, as Peter was fishing with his brother Andrew, Jesus called out to them from the shore. He told them to follow him and promised to make them “fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). Without hesitation, Peter and Andrew left their nets behind and followed Jesus.
Andrew:
Andrew was also a fisherman from Bethsaida and was Peter’s brother. Like Peter, he became one of Jesus’ most dedicated disciples.
Andrew’s Encounter with Jesus
Andrew first met Jesus through John the Baptist. After hearing John speak about Jesus, Andrew went to meet him and spent an entire day listening to his teachings. Impressed by what he heard, Andrew went to find his brother Simon (Peter) and told him “We have found the Messiah” (John 1:41).
James:
James was also a fisherman from Bethsaida and was the brother of John. Together with their father Zebedee, they owned a fishing business on the Sea of Galilee.
The Calling of James
Like Peter and Andrew, James also encountered Jesus while he was fishing. Along with his brother John, James was mending his nets when Jesus called out to them. They immediately left their boat and their father behind to follow Jesus.
