In the Bible, there were two brothers who were disciples of Jesus – Simon Peter and Andrew. These brothers were fishermen from the town of Bethsaida, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. They were among the first disciples that Jesus called to follow him.
The Call to Discipleship
One day, as Simon Peter and Andrew were casting their nets into the sea, Jesus approached them and said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) Immediately, they left their nets and followed him.
Peter’s Role Among the Disciples
Out of all the disciples, Peter was one of Jesus’ closest confidants and is often mentioned first in lists of the apostles. He was present at many important events in Jesus’ life, such as his transfiguration and his agony in the garden before his crucifixion.
Peter was also known for his impulsive nature – he was quick to speak and act without thinking things through. This sometimes got him into trouble with Jesus, such as when he tried to prevent Jesus from going to Jerusalem to be crucified.
Despite his flaws, Peter remained a faithful disciple until the end. After Jesus’ death and resurrection, he became a prominent leader in the early Christian church.
Andrew’s Role Among the Disciples
Andrew played a more behind-the-scenes role among the disciples. He is often described as bringing people to Jesus – for example, he introduced his brother Peter to Jesus shortly after he himself had become a disciple.
Andrew was also present at some important events in Jesus’ life – for example, he was one of only four disciples present at the Last Supper.
After Jesus’ death and resurrection, Andrew traveled widely preaching about him. According to tradition, he eventually traveled as far as modern-day Ukraine before being martyred for his faith.
