Why Did Jesus Give the Disciples the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is an integral part of the Christian faith, and is often referred to as the third person of the Trinity. In the Bible, we see that Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples after he ascended into heaven.

But why did Jesus give the disciples the Holy Spirit? Let’s explore this question in more detail.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he promised his disciples that he would send them a helper, or advocate, who would guide them in all truth and teach them everything they needed to know (John 14:26). This helper was none other than the Holy Spirit.

The Purpose of the Holy Spirit

So why did Jesus give the disciples the Holy Spirit? There are several reasons:

  • To Empower Them: The Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to preach and teach with boldness and authority. In Acts 1:8, Jesus tells his disciples that they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, and that they will be witnesses for him in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
  • To Guide Them: The Holy Spirit guided the disciples in their decision-making and ministry.

In Acts 13:2-3, we see that while they were worshipping and fasting together, the Holy Spirit spoke to them and told them to set apart Barnabas and Saul (later known as Paul) for a specific work.

  • To Comfort Them: The Holy Spirit comforted the disciples in times of trouble or persecution. In John 14:16-17, Jesus tells his disciples that he will ask God to send them another advocate who will be with them forever – this was a promise of comfort and reassurance.

The Result of the Holy Spirit

The result of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the disciples’ lives was nothing short of miraculous. In Acts 2, we see that on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples with power, and they began to speak in other languages and proclaim the gospel with boldness. This event marked the beginning of the Christian church, and it was all made possible through the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

In conclusion, Jesus gave his disciples the Holy Spirit to empower them, guide them, and comfort them in their ministry. The result was a powerful movement that changed the world forever. As Christians today, we too have access to this same Holy Spirit – let us seek to be empowered, guided, and comforted by him in all that we do.
